Anti-Semitism Smear Campaign Continues Part One

John Mann and his attempts to continue the anti-Semitism smear campaign, this time against left wing independent media

The post will be in two parts. This first part is about John Mann and his announcement that he intends to target left wing independent media due to alleged anti-Semitism. The second part will be about the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM), their history and their continued attempt to smear left wing activists and media as anti-Semitic.

John Mann

John Mann was Labour MP for Bassetlaw from the general election of 2001 until 28th October 2019. He announced he would not stand in the next general election on the 7th September 2019 after Theresa May nominated him for a ‘life peerage’ and entry into the House of Lords in her resignation honours list. He announced that he would become the government’s ‘anti-Semitism tsar’ and although he is no longer affiliated with any political party he remains a member of the Labour party. He was awarded the epithet Baron but in my opinion he has done nothing to earn any respectable title so I will not honour him by calling him by such.

Why the former PM would nominate him is anybody’s guess but after reading what he is planning to do I can only surmise that it was intended for him to be an instrument in the downfall of independent media, in particular left wing independent media. He has named his first target as the Canary. He has declared that the Canary is anti-Semitic which would be laughable if it were not a serious defamation. The Canary is owned by Canary Media Ltd which is owned entirely by its leadership team. One member of this team is Kerry-anne Mendoza, who is Editor-in-Chief of the Canary. Kerry co-founded the Canary along with her wife Nancy, who is also a member of the leadership team of Canary Media and Director of Communications and Membership at the Canary. Nancy is a Sephardi Jew, who originate from Sepharad, Spain or Portugal, which makes Mann’s claims that the Canary is anti-Semitic rather ridiculous as well as defamatory and libellous.

What is even more laughable is the fact that John Mann himself was interviewed by the police in 2016 with regard to his publication of a leaflet which targeted a group of people that the nazis themselves targeted and tried to eliminate … I am referring to the Roma Gypsy or traveller population. Mann had written a booklet called ‘The Bassetlaw anti-social behaviour handbook’, part of this handbook specifically targeted Roma Gypsies/travellers by listing them among various types of ‘social evils’. A family of Gypsies had complained to the police about the handbook and the police investigated it as a ‘hate incident’. According to the police they offered advice to Mann about not naming a specific group of people but to rather talk about ‘unauthorised encampments’. They took no further action.

A young Gypsy activist was so upset about the handbook that he wrote a long and impassioned letter about it, and the bullying he and his family received on a regular basis due to their ethnicity, to Jeremy Corbyn. The family stated that Corbyn responded to them in a very kind manner and passed the matter to the Chief Whip, who is responsible for party discipline. The Whip decided that no action would be taken against Mann and told the family to report the matter to the police, which they did. Now, I have no idea about how anybody else feels about the Whip’s lack of action, but on finding out about it I was incensed. The Whip not only let the family down but in my opinion he/she let the Labour party down. There were two Chief Whips in 2016, Rosie Winterton, MP for Doncaster Central, who was sacked by Corbyn and replaced by Nick Brown MP for Newcastle East, it is not made clear who the Whip was that took no action.

This young activist also sent a copy of the link to the handbook to the Travellers Times magazine who published an article on it. In response to the article Mann wrote an email to the family and to the Travellers Times. The tone of the email was not one of apology or reconciliation and contained facts that were not true or accurate. The activist stated in his letter to Corbyn that he did not feel ‘confident enough to contact John Mann Mp’ directly as he felt that John Mann Mp ‘was attempting to bully me’ by talking about his family to a third party. John Mann was , and remains to this day, completely unrepentant about the distress and upset his handbook caused the young activist, his family and the Roma Gypsy/traveller community as a whole. In my eyes this makes him absolutely no loss to the Labour party who are and always have been anti-racist. It also makes John Mann a huge hypocrite in my opinion. What gives him the right to accuse an independent news site such as the Canary with anti-Semitism when he himself is guilty of racism. Of course this last bit is my opinion and I am not speaking for anybody else, but the rest all comes from articles published by independent media.

Oh and on a last note it may interest Mann to know that the Canary remains completely independent of any advertisers, funders, companies, political organisations, or political parties. The campaign group, Labour Against Zionist Islamophobic Racism (Lazir), considers the recent attack by the chief rabbi on Labour to be part of an ongoing campaign to prevent a Corbyn-led government being elected that would criticise Israel for its treatment of the Palestinians.

We note that Labour has been haemorrhaging Jewish support since before Corbyn became leader. It began with his (Jewish) predecessor, Ed Miliband, when he condemned Israel’s August 2014 invasion of Gaza, which killed 2,200 Gazans and wounded over 10,000 more. Israeli-supporting Jews were furious that Labour described this action as “wrong and unjustifiable”. Previously, wealthy Jewish donors had supported Blair and Brown for their pro-Israel stance – and now they were pulling their money out from Labour because it dared to criticise their colony.

Lazir also notes that Corbyn was clearly identified as a target by Israel in the 2017 documentary, The lobby, that investigated the influence of the Israel lobby in the UK. It exposed the strong links between the Israeli embassy and the Jewish Labour Movement, which became active in 2015 in response to, as its chair said, “the rise of Jeremy Corbyn”. Here was evidence that the JLM was acting as little more than a front for the Israeli embassy and that the mission it set itself was to weaken Corbyn in the hope of removing him from the leadership. Ofcom rejected complaints that the documentary series was anti-Semitic or had breached impartiality rules. (JLM was formerly the pioneering Paole Zion, which had participated in the 1948 nakba ethnic cleaning of over 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland.)

Early on, the JLM and other pro-Israel lobbyists understood that the most effective way to damage Corbyn and undermine solidarity with the Palestinian cause was to weaponise the charge of anti-Semitism. The Israelis had been working on this since 2004, when their scholars worked with selected Jewish NGOs and academics to create a definition that would define meaningful criticism of Israel as anti-Semitic. The result was the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of anti-Semitism, which has been foisted upon millions of UK citizens through its adoption by the major unions and political parties. This wholesale attack on our human right to freedom of expression was orchestrated by Zionists in the UK. On this basis, anyone who states that Israel is a racist endeavour can be labelled anti-Semitic. Since Israel passed the nation-state law in July 2018, declaring the rights of Jews superior to those of all others, one can now be called a Jew-hater for simply pointing out the truth.

Lazir would also like to highlight that the myth of a “Labour anti-Semitism crisis” has been created by a media only too willing to undermine the Labour Party. The volume of anti-Semitism-related complaints against Labour members has been cited as evidence that anti-Semitic discourse in the party is commonplace. A March 2019 survey asked the public to estimate the percentage of Labour members against whom anti-Semitism complaints had been made. The average response was 34%. In reality, as of July 2019, the proportion of Labour Party members subjected to disciplinary procedures – ie, summoned for a hearing in response to a complaint, but not necessarily found guilty – amounted to less than one-10th of one percent. This skewed view is compounded by a media which ignores statements from Jewish Voice for Labour, which, unlike the JLM, requires full members to be both Jewish and Labour – and which completely support Corbyn.

Lazir believes the UK’s mainstream media has become so terrified of pressure from the Zionist lobby that it now ignores human rights abuses by Israel as a matter of course. The recent attack on Gaza that left 34 dead, including a family of nine, who just happened to be in a building that Israel considered empty, was ignored by the BBC and hardly reported upon by major news outlets.

Lazir calls upon the media to reflect upon whose interests it is serving in allowing those from outside the UK to influence the election of our leaders, through promulgating these politically motivated and fraudulent anti-Semitism smears. Telling Jews they are at risk when they are not is fake news and dangerous misinformation. Our democracy is being undermined by Israel supporters – as enacted by rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, a man who defends every bomb that falls on Gaza. Even Tories like Sir Alan Duncan were targeted for supporting Palestine. This election is major for the British people – let’s not let Israel mess it up by smears and slander.

Rachel Riley went on Victoria Derbyshire to complain about being ‘trolled’ online. She managed to turn on the waterworks and make out she was a victim of anti-Semitism bullying. She even went so far as to join an anti-trolling campaign. She managed to fool many people including some celebrities who I will not name here. Rachel Riley is in fact a cyber-bully who sided with an Islamophobic, homophobic, anti-Semitic Scottish church minister, because he does not like Jeremy Corbyn. Her known associates on Twitter include Gnasherjew, Sussex Friends of Israel and other right wing anti-Corbyn, pro-Israel trolls. She, along with the aforementioned social media miscreants, make it their business to bully pro-Corbyn and pro-Palestine supporters.

It is a well known fact, on social media platforms, that she, along with Z list ex soap actress Tracy Ann Obermann bullied and harassed a 16 year old girl and her father, on seeing what Riley and Obermann were doing their followers diligently followed suit and ‘dogpiled’ the poor girl and also made death threats. This resulted in the girl being afraid to leave her home for 6 months. Riley is currently suing Mike Sivier of Vox Political Online for daring to write about her despicable bullying of the 16 year old girl, Riley and Obermann both accuse Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters of anti-Semitism with absolutely no credible evidence.

Rachel Riley also has close links with the Twitter account Stop Funding Fake News, which targeted the Canary amongst other pro-Corbyn media sites. She does not hide the fact that she supports that account and in fact often promotes it. She has made herself judge, jury and executioner of people and web sites that she in her ‘infinite wisdom’ considers to be anti-Israel and pro-Corby, and does not appear to have any problem with her followers then going out of their way to make the lives of those she has judged to be guilty, absolutely miserable.

On the 21st November 2019 it was reported in both mainstream and independent media that Riley had photoshopped a photograph of Jeremy Corbyn’s arrest in the 1980s, when he protested the racist Apartheid system of South Africa. In the photograph he is pictured holding a placard that states ” Defend the right to demonstrate against Apartheid. Join this picket“. Riley photoshopped the placard so that the words now stated that “Jeremy Corbyn is a racist endeavour” Despite numerous emails and complaints to Channel 4 Riley has not been dismissed. The reasons for this are not known and we can only speculate.

I emailed Endemol Shine UK about Rachel Riley a few months ago. This was when they still had an email address displayed on their website, it seems to have been removed as I could not find it anywhere on the site. Their response was basically ‘what she does off screen is not our business’. Shouldn’t the fact that she represents them when she appears on Channel 4’s ‘Countdown’ and ‘8 out of 10 cats does Countdown’ make them worry that she is misrepresenting them. For surely that is what she is doing as their employee, she represents Endemol Shine UK both on screen and off screen. I cannot watch Countdown or 8 out of 10 cats any more because I cannot stand seeing her 5 days a week on my television screen. I have seen what she tweets and it is hateful. She has compared Jeremy Corbyn to the Nazis which is about as big an insult as you can give.

It is high time that Twitter and Facebook took some responsibility and banned her and her right wing anti-Corbyn followers from their platforms. Numerous complaints have been made about her, Gnasherjew, Sussex Friends of Israel, LAAS and CAA; but neither Twitter or Facebook have ever cautioned, suspended or banned them. They delete pro-Palestine pages and posts from pro-Palestine supporters, but never anything from pro-Israel supporters or anti-Corbyn trolls. They delete alternative media site pages and posts but never anything from mainstream media, no matter how false or hateful. This just goes to show their double standards and also displays obvious bias towards certain states and political viewpoints.

(The colonisation of Palestine by Israel and the constant screams of ‘anti-Semitism’)

The problem in Palestine is not the majority of Jewish people that live there, I am sure that on the whole they are good, peaceful people. The problem is the state and Zionist government of Israel, the violent illegal settlers and extremists like Benzi Gopstein of the right wing group Lehava. The way Israel acts with no fear of recrimination or impunity is a poor reflection of the lack of action or recrimination on the part of the international community and the UN.

It is very hard to understand why mainstream media is not reporting on the atrocities happening to Palestinians on a daily basis. Why is a nine year old boy being shot in the head with an exploding bullet by an IOF sniper not reported by mainstream media? Why is the fact that hundreds of Palestinians, including children, are being held in prison on ‘administrative detention’ not being questioned by the mainstream media and international community? Why was the fact that a 4 year old was arrested and interrogated by the IOF not a major news item on evening news channels worldwide? Why was the fact that Israeli forces raided a Palestinian home, shot an unarmed Palestinian woman in the head, and then abducted her son, not mentioned in mainstream media? Why does mainstream media continue to report Israel as the victim in all this? When Israel embarks on a campaign of firing missiles on Gaza and the people in Gaza dare to retaliate, why is Israel always portrayed as the victim? This is despite the fact that it is Palestinians that are killed and injured in large numbers whist few Israelis are injured and even fewer killed. There are a lot of whys with no answers from anybody in mainstream media.

To me the biggest WHY throughout all this is why is anti-Semitism treated as being worse than other forms of bigotry eg Islamophobia, homophobia, misogyny, racism, ageism etc. I asked one of Gnasherjews followers on Twitter that question months ago and he could not answer me. Can anybody reading this article answer this question for me? Can anybody answer any of the WHYs in this article? I did meet one person who could answer one of my whys and perhaps his answer covered all of my whys. I recently met the Labour candidtae for my constituency and asked him why anti-Semitism is treated as being worse than all other forms of bigotry. His answer was very simple, the Israeli Lobby. They have a large amount of power and vast wealth, especially in the UK and USA. They contribute huge sums to political parties and campaigners. The Adelsons and Donald Trump being the perfect example of this. They orchestrate smear campaigns against those who do not support them as has happened with Jeremy Corbyn and other Labour party MPs and members. They, of course, have aid with these campaigns within the country where the campaign is taking place. Sometimes the aid comes from within the political party targeted as shown in the Aljazeera documentary The Lobby.

There is something fundamentally wrong when one group of people can colonise the land of another group of people; then evict the current occupants from their homes, demolish their homes and charge them for the demolition of their homes. The colonists then begin to murder and imprison the indigenous population and declare that they have the right to do so as they are ‘God’s chosen people’. The rest of the world sits and watches as the colonists do this and just shrug their shoulders and say”Meh”.

Illegal settlers deliberately raze and set fire to valuable olive tree orchards thus depriving Palestinians of their source of income. They deliberately aim their cars at and run Palestinians over, this includes children. They throw stones at passing cars driven by Palestinians, sometimes killing occupants of these cars. They may get arrested for these offences but they are seldom punished. The teen that was arrested for the death of Aisha al-Rabi, who died after being hit in the head by a stone thrown at the car she was a passenger in, was released on house arrest and never prosecuted.

If you dare to question or criticise Israel you are immediately accused of ‘anti-Semitism’ this due to the ‘weaponising’ of the term anti-Semitism and the wording of the IHRA’s ‘Working Definition of Anti-Semitism‘. You are classed as the worst of all possible racists and you then have to fight to clear your name as in the cases of MP Chris Williamson and Jackie Walker. Jackie Walker was expelled from the Labour party after withdrawing from disciplinary hearings against her because she was refused the right to make a statement beforehand; Chris Williamson was suspended for alleged anti-Semitism when he said that Labour had “given too much ground” in the face of criticism over the way the Labour Party had handled claims of anti-Semitism within the party;and the journalist Asa Winstanley who was suspended from the Labour party for calling the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) a “proxy for the Israeli embassy”. The way all three of these people, and others, have been treated by Labour’s NEC is quite disgraceful.

To end this piece I ask this final question and this time it is a what. What is the hold that Israel has over some of the most powerful nations and people of the world? What is it that make the international community and the UN reluctant to point the finger and censure Israel? Is it really all about the money or is there something else involved?
